Welcome to the desert: Anza Borrego Camping

Eric, Chief, and I tackled the Anza Borrego badlands this weekend. The desert is an interesting place: great for stargazing, the silence is deafening, and the sky is a deep, deep blue. The vast expense of open land allows the mind to wander and expand into the empty, wild space. We camped in the badlands, old sediment beds that are eroding into fingers of spiny mud with great crevasses between that have no bottom. Getting there was no easy task. We drove back a few miles of “primitive roads” which were no more than old sandy washes and rocky paths hammered out over time by off road vehicles. The last time I camped in Anza Borrego I was camping in the high desert at 6500′. This time we camped down in the desert basin at a few hundred feet above sea level. My mission for next time: hike in and camp beneath one of the towering 8000′ peaks, and then climb one before sunrise. Undoubtedly though, another great trip and basic adventure into the great outdoors of Southern California.

Wrap-up review: The Cramps at House of Blues

Last night I had the privilege and pleasure to see The Cramps play at the House of Blues downtown on 6th Ave. One of my favorite bands (and undoubtedly one band I’ve been dying to see for years now), The Cramps took the stage around 10pm to the sound of creepy organ music under dim red lights. Lux, dressed in tight black leather, came slinking out on stage with 3 bottles of wine and quickly bit the cork off one and spit it into the crowd with Poison Ivy following closely behind in her traditional cat woman dominatrix outfit. Wasting no time, they broke into their set and the crowd exploded. Even after all of these years, The Cramps still delivered a no holds barred, super energetic, musical assault that got the everyone in the house moving. Without question, they delivered one kick ass show of American psychobilly rock n’ roll! I can now die happy…

Vegas Baby!

Another item taken off my list of “things to do before I die”. I finally got an appointment to get tattooed by my absolute favorite tattoo artist, Ryan Downie, in Las Vegas on Friday 11/3. This guy’s art is awesome and his skill as a tattoo artist is amazing. I first met him at a tattoo convention in Phoenix almost 2 years ago and have been wanting to get tattooed by him ever since. After calling the shop everyday for a week I was finally able to get a whole evening reserved to finish out my left sleeve and to get a custom inner bicep piece on my right arm. As icing on the cake, my little brother Eric’s birthday is Nov 3rd and I managed to convince Chief and him to come out to Vegas to celebrate. It’s going to be great! I included some of his work below.
